Fort Vancouver – Bakehouse, Wash House, and Well

2012.09.29

Across from the Kitchen is the Wash House, reconstructed to provide public restrooms.  Behind that is one of the wells.  Nearby, against the palisade, are some luxurious outhouses.

Extending through the palisade wall is the Bakehouse.  Using the two large brick ovens, the baker and his assistants made tens of thousands of sea biscuits each year.  Sea biscuits (also known as hardtack and other names) contain only flour and water, no shortening or other fat, and so if properly stored can last for several years.
