Drawer Dovetails – Part 1

Finally it was time to start dovetailing the first drawer.  I had interrupted the nightstands project periodically to build a moxon vise, which I now put to use.

In order to maximize the internal depth of the drawer, I cut the drawer bottom groove as low as I could without dropping below the tail.  This is pushing the limits, even in hard maple.  Once it’s all glued together then there shouldn’t be any problems, but in this unassembled state the narrow neck is a little fragile.

I spent some time carefully planing the sides until they fit into the drawer opening.  Then I laid out, sawed, and pared the dovetails that will connect the drawer back.
