Chamfering Edges of Vise Chops

2010.04.24

The vise chops were both a little tall relative to the top of the workbench.  So I marked with pencil before disassembling the vises.  I clamped the two chops together after marking a line about 1/16″ below my original marks.  This should give me some clearance even after re-flattening the workbench a time or two.

The Hitachi saw with the EZ Smart Guide could not cut all the way through, so I finished with a handsaw.  It didn’t matter that the hand cut was a little rough, because the next step was to chamfer the front of the top edge, using the Milwaukee saw set at 45°.  The resulting chamfer was about 3/4″.  I also chamfered the bottom edges about 1/2″.

The rest of the chamfering I did with the block plane, setting the attachment to approximately 1/4″.
